Travel Log 2011

This past week our family took a short vaction to San Diego. I love San Diego, the weather is great and there is so much to do with little kids. Here is our travel log 2011...

At 5:00 am on a Tuesday morning the alarm clock rings, time to get up and finishing loading the car for our trip. After a few diaper changes, we are loaded in the car and on our way, it is 5:45 am. Granted when I work this a normal time for me to up and sometimes out of the house but during the summer this is not the case.  After a quick coffee and soda stop for the road we hop on the 215 to the 15. We heard that the mountain pass on the 15 was down to one lane so we wanted to make it through before all the morning truckers, but there was no construction and we flew through. The plan was to stop in Baker (home of the worlds largest thermometer) at Big Boy for breakfast. (Yes, this was some a big thing for Big Boy since there are no Big Boy's in Nevada and I wanted a good taste we had in Michigan) However, we got to the Big Boy in Baker at 7:15 am. It does not open til 8:00 and I was not waiting for it to open so back in the car and drive another hour to Barstow for Big Boy. The Big Boy in Barstow, was disappointing. My husband and I got the breakfast bar which was not that good and it took forever for my daughter pancake. Really how long does it take to make a child pancake apparently 20 minutes. They also had a lot of flies in the place which makes me not recommend the Barstow Big Boy. Back in the car and off to San Diego.

We made a few more potty stops along the way and arrived at our hotel the Best Western Mission Bay at 1:45. Check in was not until 2 but room was ready so we got in right away. The hotel was nice and close the main destination in San Diego: Sea World. besides the price of the hotel being within our budget it had free parking and free continental breakfast with waffles. I have no complains with the hotel it was clean and the room had a mini fridge and microwaves.

After a quick change it was off to the beach. We were right by Mission Beach however, we did not go to the beach by the ocean, there is a small beach on Mission Bay it was the right speed for our almost three year old. Not a lot of waves and a lifeguard on duty. The kids loved it but the water was so cold. After an hour we had enough of the sand so back the hotel to clean up and off to dinner.

For dinner we ate at Phil's BBQ, it is one of those places if you go to San Diego you need to eat there. The food was good and yes you stand in line outside for a while but it is worth the wait. I ate the chicken and baby back ribs combo. It came with two sides Marconi salad and fries both very good. Dinner was great and we met up with my Grand little sister form sorority who live there, of course is was great to see her. After dinner we headed back to the hotel and off to bed we went.

The next morning we were up early had breakfast at the hotel and we were off to Sea World. I had been to Sea World Ohio when I was young but did not remember much, most people did not even know that Sea World was ever in Ohio but there were there.

I had prepaid for parking and we were only ten rows back from the entrance. We were there when the park opened and had bought our tickets ahead of time so there was no wait for that, once we got in the park we noticed that they had something called all day dining. This was AWESOME! There are four restaurants you can eat at in the park, each time you went through the line you got an entree, side or dessert, and beverage. This was $30 a person and $15 for the kids. We did eat at all four restaurants, more on each of those later.
The first place we headed was to the Sesame bay of play. Our oldest loved it she was big enough to ride all three of the rides there. Elmo's Flying Fish, Abby's Spinning Stars and Oscar's Rockin Eel, she rode them all multiple times. When the park first opens not a lot of people are there so there were no lines at these rides and she just kept riding with one of us. Then we went to the Dolphin Show, no splash zone for us, the overcast 70 degree weather was a bit chilly for this desert girl.  After the show it was starting to warm up we decided to get a early lunch of sorts, first place to eat Cypso Smokehouse. Hubby got the sampler platter, pudding, and soda, I got a chicken salad, strawberries and soda, and we had a hot dog kids meal with jello. Food was good. More going around the park, seeing some of the animal exhibits and then Big Bird and Elmo were out so picture time. Then to see Cirque del Mar good show typical Cir show. Second lunch at Mama Rosa Pizzeria, We all had pizza and more strawberries of course since that was one of the few things the big kid would eat. Then it was off to more shows and exhibits.Time for more eating Seaport Market place, excellent sandwiches and it was air conditioned which by mid day the sun came out and it became hot and muggier. Nice break then off to the space needle thing all four of us could ride which was nice for a change. Then back to kiddie land while the big kid rode the baby and I went to the one area she could crawl and it was nice for her to be able to crawl. Yes, after a while there we tried the last place to eat, Shipwreak, I got Salmon, burgers and rice crispy treats. It was all good, lastly we saw the Shamu Rocks show which was good, and then we were back to pass out at the hotel.

Next day back to Vegas, we stopped to see some friends in Oceanside and were on our way back home.
San Diego was a good vacation and we will go back to Sea World again when the kids get a little bigger.
